About CDAC
Overview This is a archival black-and-white photograph capturing a collaborative meeting among four individuals, likely in an architectural, planning, or design studio environment. The filename indicates the subjects are Dave Jacquat, Patsy Owens, Helen Cozzetto, and Rich Starr at the Community Design Assistance Center (CDAC) around 1988. Subjects and Layout Foreground Left: A man with a full beard and thick, wavy hair stands and leans over the table. He is dressed in a light-colored, vertically striped blazer. Center Seated: A woman with glasses and straight, jaw-length hair sits at the table, wearing a light, speckled or patterned short-sleeve blouse. Her hands rest near a large sheet of paper spread before her. Center Standing: A woman with short, cropped hair stands behind the seated woman, wearing a solid-colored crewneck sweater over a collared shirt. She looks down intently at the table. Right Seated: A young man with short, neatly combed dark hair sits at the far side of the table, wearing a vertically striped button-down shirt. He holds a pen and is focused on paperwork in front of him. Setting and Contextual Details Work Surface: The individuals are gathered around a long, plain table covered with several large sheets of paper, which appear to be site plans, blueprints, or maps. Background Wall: Two large documents—one appearing to be an aerial or topographical satellite map and another a regional map—are pinned to the wall behind the group. Background Environment: To the right, an open doorway reveals an office interior. Next to a potted plant near the door, a baby infant swing or carrier is visible, suggesting an informal or flexible workplace environment.
The Community Design Assistance Center was established in 1988 through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education program.
The two main goals of establishing the center were to provide underserved communities throughout Virginia with low-cost planning and design assistance and to provide landscape architecture, architecture, planning, and building construction students with an opportunity for paid experience related to their future careers that also taught students about participatory design and planning processes.
